Boid in Command - Do you trust you organization? Is your organization self-organizing?
Boid is a legendary AI program from the 80ies. It is about emergent systems, i.e. self-organising organisations, where the whole is greater that the individuals, but the individuals are in command. Boid is short for “bird-oid”, i.e. bird robot, and simulates bird flocks. In a flock every boid decides which direction to take based on simple principle guidelines. Every boid is also paying attention to the group and thereby something greater emerges. One boid can get the entire flock to change direction, but no boid is leading the group. One boid or several might be at the front pointing out the direction, but they can also retire into to group and the group decides whether they follow or not. If no boid was flying the flock wouldn’t get anywhere. If all boids were flying independently of each other, they would be alone. If no boid took the lead the flock would eventually crash.
