Boid in Command - Do you trust you organization? Is your organization self-organizing?

Boid is a legendary AI program from the 80ies. It is about emergent systems, i.e. self-organising organisations, where the whole is greater that the individuals, but the individuals are in command. Boid is short for “bird-oid”, i.e. bird robot, and simulates bird flocks.

In a flock every boid decides which direction to take based on simple principle guidelines. Every boid is also paying attention to the group and thereby something greater emerges. One boid can get the entire flock to change direction, but no boid is leading the group. One boid or several might be at the front pointing out the direction, but they can also retire into to group and the group decides whether they follow or not. If no boid was flying the flock wouldn’t get anywhere. If all boids were flying independently of each other, they would be alone. If no boid took the lead the flock would eventually crash.

In Command is an encouragement to everyone to take command to handle every situation yourselves. Because you are closest, you know best ad you truly care. And you’re always in command of the entire picture. In every situation you are always driving the business, the delivery and your and other’s personal development. Engagement, Solution and Talent Management. That is what you do, in every situation!

In Command is also a promise, to help everyone to understand, to be in command of a situation. Insecurity paralyses us and is our greatest enemy. Boid is about support. To understand the complete picture, to get ready to act, to find others to act with. Always start with the network around you, as they are the closest to the situation at hand and then use others when you need pieces for the bigger picture.

Finally, In Command is an encouragement to take care of yourself and a promise to create a supportive environment of trust, where no one is alone. Insecurity, loneliness and exposed pressure are the foundation of mental unhealthiness. And we need to take care of that to be happy and to be at our best – to creat and make magic together.
